The first kind of automobile part that comes to mind when repairing one's car is OEM vehicle parts. The term "OEM" stands for "oe manufacturer," and this means that OEM auto parts come immediately from the company that made the automobile in the first place. In other words, if someone's Chevrolet Cavalier were to fail due to alternator or basic then an OEM alternator or starter could be purchased to be able to repair the car. The benefit for buying oe manufacturer auto parts is the actual fact that there will generally be a warrantee on the part that is bought. In addition, one is usually guaranteed that the part will work and fit the automobile on the first try.
A downside to buying OEM auto parts is the fact they are generally much more expensive that other styles of vehicle parts. Whereas other car parts may be around $50, the same vehicle parts that are bought from the OEM may be around $150. The purchase price makes all the difference, too, when repairing your car, so that it may not automatically behoove you to buy OEM automobile parts.
Alternatively, the other type of auto parts that can be purchased when mending an automobile is after-market auto parts, or automobile parts that are created for the same auto by third-parties. These car parts are generally much much easier to run into, and more auto repair shops and retail stores generally hold after-market vehicle parts instead of OEM auto parts. That is one of the big advantages to buying those types of car parts, but another is that they are significantly less expensive than OEM automobile parts. This is touched on within the last paragraph about OEM parts, but after-market auto parts are usually 50% or even more less than the initial manufacturer's vehicle parts.
With that said, it is really up to the person and the situation when the automobile is being repaired. Many people choose OEM auto parts just because they are the safest kind of parts to go with, but quarrels for third-party vehicle parts are because they're much cheaper tend to be more accessible.
